Moulds/Sickness; What the Field Has Taught Me.

I have taught mould inspection for over three years these are on site real world mould classes. I have introduced many people to mould inspection and remediation. I have a rather odd perspective on mould and physical reactions to mould. A student must provide real mould jobs for the class to begin. The first thing I teach in mould class is to use your senses to detect the presence of mould. An acute sense of smell is not required, what is required is to train yourself to detect the smell and feel of moulds. All mould inspectors that fully(includes crawl spaces attic and foundation) inspect a home get sick from mould. The length of time of exposure, the severity of exposure and the sensitivity of the inspector dictate how long the inspector is going to be sick. Most inspectors in fair to good health stay sick for about 2-4 hours. Symptoms include headaches, sore throat, nausea and sneezing. If we smell mould in an inspection usually after a few experiences a mould inspector will feel the affects of mould within 15 minutes of being in the subject property. The allergens make you sneeze, the toxins give you a headache and nausea, and the pathogens are the hot topic in great dispute. If you work or live in a mouldy environment you get use to the smells and headaches, mould is a lot like bad music in that respect. However if mould inspectors get sick in a matter of minutes although you may be accustomed to daily exposure it cannot be good for you.

Mould infestation are many times easy to detect and you can detect the mould colonies by smell hopefully before you get sick, bacteria just makes you sick.

One of the mould inspector tricks of the trade is that when you encounter a local mould infestation at the back of the subject property and you are going to be in the room for less than 5 minutes, get 2 or 3 paper towels, wet the paper towels and hold them over your mouth and nose for breathing protection.

This trick also works to help you detect the presence of moulds. Before you enter a building or enclosed area place the moistened paper towels over your nose and mouth, take several deep breaths move into the suspect area remove the moist paper towel and breathe. If it smells like mould there is a very good chance that there is mould.

Many parents can tell when a child is getting sick especially if the sickness is a common ailment. You don't need to be a doctor in flu season. You do not need to be a mould inspector to ascertain the presence of mould.

Do you ever stay in hotels, stay with friends, let your children stay with friends or relatives, have so much rain the inside of your car, camper, cabin or home get wet, work or go to school in an enclosed environment? You should be able to tell if there is mould in your environment within a few minutes of entering the environment.

Awareness and vigillance are sometimes not enough nor are mould infestations always obvious and a professional mould inspection is required. However awareness and vigillance are a considerable step in the right direction.

Mould is: Insidious
Working or spreading harmfully in a subtle or stealthy manner: insidious rumors; an insidious disease.

Mould is not a fast killer. Moulds are known to cause disease, search the universities in the Google University Search Engine for medical questions.

Allergen
Any substance that can cause an allergy

Toxic
Of, relating to, or caused by a toxin or other poison: a toxic condition; toxic hepatitis.

Pathogen
An agent that causes disease, especially a living microorganism such as a bacterium, virus or fungus.

Systemic Of or relating to systems or a system.
1. Relating to or affecting the entire body or an entire organism: systemic symptoms; a systemic poison.
2. Relating to or affecting a particular body system, especially the nervous system: a systemic lesion.

Insidious
Working or spreading harmfully in a subtle or stealthy manner: insidious rumors; an insidious disease.

If You are going to spend money on mould testing you should read the following.

The Truth about Mould Testing and Mould Identification.

Scientific Testing and Presumptive Identification

Moulds are not a very cooperative species when it comes to identification. In fact moulds when being grown for purposes of identification are almost impossible to control. Furthermore, like all plants will not grow in one soil, all moulds will not grow in a one formula petri dish. The mould industry is divided about almost everything. Sampling. identification and remediation there is no agreement on anything. Testing to identify mould is important if any illness is involved. If no one is sick in the environment identifying the moulds may be of little or no benefit. However, if you are going to test for moulds with the objective of identification you need to read the following.

Scientific Testing believed to be definitive. Chemical fingerprinting by the following competitive technologies provides an answer to what species of mould is in your sample. Here are some of the cost and limitations of these technologies.

You have to tell it which mould you are looking for. Only Identifies 130 Moulds. Sample is consumed.

Which Scientific Testing Method is Right for Your Situation
Mould by standard laboratory methods is expensive. Most mould infestation are multispecied and identifying the most popular moulds in a mould infestation by the scientific methods is going to be costly and time consuming. At the Florida Mould Institute we use both, Biolog and DNA as well as other genetic test for the purpose of identifying moulds. Have the moulds sampled identified by a laboratory for readily identifiable moulds. This preliminary report will offer some guidance in the decision making process. To identify all the moulds in a sample you may need to use both the Biolog and DNA.

Presumptive Identification Man and the Microscope.

New technologies are changing the way we look at moulds. Traditionally armed with illustrated and photographic reference manuals and a microscope the laboratories examine moulds on a slide generally at a magnification of 600X. This method of identification is used for surface tape lifts, bioaerosol cassettes and live mould grown generally in a petri dish. Moulds grown in petri dishes can make this job easy or difficult depending the way the moulds grew in the petri dish. If you have well defined colonies of 5-7 moulds the job is going to be easier. If you have a Fungal jungle in the petri dish with 5-7 moulds that has challenges. Broad Spectrum growth of moulds is necessary to identify as many moulds as possible in a sample. Single petri dish single media methods will not grow all of the moulds in a field sample. To grow moulds and promote broad spectrum growth the mould sample must be diluted in liquid and divided into several media. A petri dish with several different but clean segregated mould colonies is much easier to identify.

Relying on bioaerosol Cassettes analysis and spore counts preformed using presumptive identification is risky as a analytical tool for determining the mould spore counts and types from air samples. Known for false negatives, positives and the types of moulds reported rarely match viable findings. None the less this form of testing is most popular within certain camps of the mould industry as you get a report signed by a laboratory and the bioaerosol cassette test is very profitable. Here is a air volume comparison of bioaersol cassettes and your lungs.

Which Mould Test Should I Have a Mould Inspector Take?

The following are Florida Mould Institute guidelines for residential mould testing.

The Florida Mould Institute dose not encourage mould testing unless the cause of allergenic and toxic symptoms cannot be found elsewhere.

You must ask yourself why you are having a mould test taken?

No one is sick the house is clean or empty and you want an air test.

bioaerosol Cassette sampling minimum 150 liters, 2 outdoor 3 per 1,000 feet under air with visable survey.

Occupants have allergenic and toxic symptoms or worse.

Viable testing and visual survey. If the cause of the mould is found you can have samples taken and archived, clean up the mould and reconsider identification needs. If you want to know what types of mould you are being exposed to you must speciate the moulds for the identification to be of use. Take lots of samples and document through chain of custody where the samples will be kept. It is necessary to grow the mould samples and start the identification process. Some moulds will be readily identifiable and some will not. The unidentified moulds should be recultured for purity. Once a clean well defined colony is grown if the laboratory cannot speciate the mould a sample should be prepared for chemical analysis. You now must choose Biolog or Q-PCR(DNA)

What do I do once I learn what moulds I have been exposed to?
You will at least have the name of the species of moulds you have been exposed to and can search the university medical libraries. Google University Search Engine for medical questions.

You have just decided that you realy do not need to test for mould you just want to clean it up.

 EPA Mold Cleanup Guidelines

The above is a real world analysis of mould testing technologies available directly to the general public. These testing methods are from the EPA,accreditied laboratories and the accrediating bodies. Research and the technologies of the last 6 month has moved mould identification to the desktop. The new technology is cheap and easy to use. The overall objective of the technologe and methods is to promote viable mould testing so consumers can get better faster, and cheaper answers to their mould problems.

Want to test your home and office the Sputum test may be the answer!
